Simulation of mitigation strategies to reduce nitrogen leaching from grazed pasture

چکیده
Strategies to reduce nitrogen leaching losses from pastoral farming in the Lake Taupo catchment are required to address declining water quality in the lake. This study used a biophysical whole farm simulation model, EcoMod, to explore the potential for four mitigation strategies to reduce N leaching in a soil and climate typical of the region. The strategies were use of: a nitrification inhibitor (DCD); steers instead of heifers (STEER); salt as a diuretic (SALT) and; high sugar ryegrass (HSG). These were compared to a BASE scenario of grazed heifers. Each of the simulated mitigation strategies showed the potential to significantly reduce nitrogen leaching compared to BASE by 25 to 45%. All mitigation strategies reduced nitrogen fixation due to more efficient plant use of nitrogen from urinary and faecal sources. This also contributed to an increase in pasture intake for SALT, STEER and DCD, but not for HSG. These mitigation strategies were explored at a single-paddock level and planned experimental studies will further examine the effectiveness of the strategies.

New nitrogen mitigation technologies for evaluation in the Lake Taupo catchment
Planned implementation of a nitrogen (N) “cap” on land in the Lake Taupo catchment has led to the need for a range of N mitigation options for pastoral farmers to increase profitability while farming within the N cap. A multi-disciplinary research programme has focused on the potential of targeting different parts of the N cycle to increase N efficiency and reduce N leaching losses. A range of ...
متن کاملA preliminary study to model the effects of a nitrification inhibitor on nitrous oxide emissions from urine-amended pasture
New Zealand’s grazed pastures receive large quantities of nitrogen (N) inputs from animal excreta and chemical fertilisers. While N promotes pasture growth, surplus N can cause environmental problems by leaching into waterways or by nitrifying and denitrifying to form the greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O). Various approaches have been attempted to mitigate the economic and environmental impac...
متن کاملDetermining critical nitrogen application rates to reduce nitrate leaching in dairy pastures
Over the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in dairy farming in New Zealand. Nitrate leaching from intensive agricultural systems, e.g. dairy farms, is suspected to cause increased nitrate concentrations in ground and surface waters. The objective of this research programme was to determine nitrate leaching losses on dairy pasture systems as affected by the application of dairy shed e...
متن کاملThe challenges of incorporating urine and dung patches in process-based modelling of grazed agricultural systems
Animals are well known to be important in lateral transfers of nitrogen within the farm boundary. Those transfers can be categorised into those that are: (a) primarily random and smallscale dung and urine patches within a grazed paddock, (b) larger and systematic transfers resulting from preferred grazing and resting areas and (c) those that are additionally mediated by management actions such ...
متن کاملAchieving High Dry-matter Intake from Pasture with Grazing Dairy Cows
Due to economic, environmental and animal-welfare constraints, it is envisaged that in the future a larger proportion of the milk produced in temperate regions will be produced from grazed pasture. However, with the selection of modern higher-production dairy cows, increased emphasis on product quality and issues associated with nitrogen leaching, soil compaction, greenhouse-gas emissions and a...
